About the breed

Good nature, intelligent and loyal. Females stand between 13 and 17 inches at the shoulder; males range from 14 to 18 inches.  The minis have the same traits as their larger counter parts the Australian Shepherd. They are bred to herd livestock and guard the family farm.  The goal when breeding the Mini Aussie is to preserve these traits, as intelligent family oriented dogs in a smaller package.  The smaller size, like any other breed or variation happened by selective breeding over time.  Small standard Aussies bred with other small standards eventually led to the Minis and Toys we have today.  It did not happen, as some claim, by crossing the breed with other smaller breeds of herding dogs. An Aussie is an Aussie, small or large. 

 The Miniature Australian Shepherd is a small size herding dog originated in the United States.  Minis are every inch a true herding dog: energetic, versatile, rugged, and extremely bright. The eye-catching coat comes in black, blue merle, red, and red merle.   Exceptional agility combined with strength and stamina allows for working over a variety of terrain. This highly versatile, energetic dog makes an excellent athlete with superior intelligence and a willingness to please.
